For many years while teaching in small private schools, all I dreamt about was starting a nature based learning center. I had the opportunity to run one for a year at Heathcote Intentional Community in Freeland, MD. It took so much of me but, like, you said, it was like my first child. I had my young dog Rochelle with me at the time. I miss those days.

Years later, I facilitate an independent online math and science program. All self-paced. Quite the stark contrast from my Heathcote Art & Science Center.

I’ve visited and have been inspired by a Sudbury school in Baltimore and a Free School in DE. They helped me facilitate my Heathcote program.

Do you see yourself running Mosaic for many more years to come? It sounds incredible.

Love this, Nancy! What a journey. I can relate to so much of what you wrote. For me, I've created self-directed contexts in many forms and iterations, but none that persist the way Mosaic has. That is an incredible gift you have offered the community. And for me, each iteration, including the heartbreak was absolutely worth it, always informing the new iterations that followed, and enriching my own life, and the lives of those I'm in relationship with, including my own kids. The gifts of the journey continue to reveal themselves many years later, through relationships, collaborations, the circle of families we treasure and who treasure us. And in who I've become through all of this. Honoring the wisdom I hold from forging a different path, and the incredible humility that comes along with it. Grateful, grateful, grateful.
